Since 1960 the world's population has more than doubled. Over 7.5 billion people currently live on our planet. This visualisation allows you to explore how growth rates have affected the population numbers of the different countries of the world.
All countries retain their modern (as of 2017) borders throughout the visualization. Population data displayed before recognition of a state as independent is attributed to the territory as it was, despite its historic change of status to for example a province or region of an other country. This principle applies to for example the Former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Sudan and the Soviet Union.
